Spongebob Smearpants ....

So my sister-in-law and I decided (before we moved here to Oregon) that we were going to have a joint birthday party for our girls. Considering their birthday's are only 4 days apart (unless it's a leap year then it's 5 days) we figured why not!? Both of the princesses are crazy about Spongebob Squarepants. So, naturally we decided that we'd do a "Spongebob" party. Complete with a spongebob character cake .You know the kind ..you buy the special character pan, and then decorate all the detail with the stars. Looks SUPER easy on the instructions, Sis and I figured we'd be able to do it no problem. We thought that if we did a "practice" cake before the actual party, we could decide better if the cake was something that we would be able to accomplish. Also we wanted to make sure that it was going to taste ok with all that frosting.

So we baked the cake (at 9 pm) and decided that we were going to make our own frosting (cream cheese frosting). So while the cake was baking, we made our frosting. Now the frosting calls for vanilla extract, but it calls for CLEAR vanilla extract. We didn't have any clear vanilla, so we figured the regular vanilla would work just fine.

We made our frosting, and after the cake cooled for about an hour, started to color it. Now who would have thought that Spongebob would need 8 different colors of frosting?! Surely not us .. but lo and behold, he did. So, after about 30 minutes of tweaking the colors so they were just right, we decided we were ready to start frosting.

Oh my oh my oh my. Had we known how detailed it was going to be, and how difficult it was going to be (at first) I don't know that we would have even attempted to do this cake. There are so many little details that you really don't think about .. but ... we decided to trek forward and do our best to complete the cake. We were up until almost 3 am, and we weren't close to finishing the decorating of the cake.

So into the fridge Spongebob went, and into the bed I soon followed. We decided that we would finish Spongebob the next evening, once the girls were asleep. One thing that we learned after putting spongebob, and all the remaining frosting into the fridge overnight, is that the cold frosting is actually a lot easier to work with. Especially the black. *note to self for final cake* chill black frosting.

Anyway, spongebob now was almost complete. The girls were running amuck, and we decided that before we got down to the nitty gritty details, we would put them to bed, so we wouldn't get nudged and mess it all up.

I'm rocking my little one to sleep, and sis is getting ready to put her little one down. She lifts the princess over her lap (She was sitting at the kitchen table) and her foot hit the cardboard that Spongebob was sitting on. Off the table he slid ... down the chair .. and onto the floor. It was one of those things that happens so fast, but so slow at the same time. And while it's happening, you just so happen to be stuck in the biggest pool of quicksand known to man. You can't move a muscle ... can hardly even breathe.

Luckily ... Spongebob landed right side up .. so there was ZERO frosting on the carpet. That would have been not good. However .. his pants (that we had JUST frosted by the way) were smeared all over sis's white chair ... mind you this is brown and black, and even some red colored frosting. Not good .. nor very easy to clean.

Thank GOD that wasn't our final cake ... lol. We shed our tears for Spongebob, and then cut him up. He actually was pretty tasty.

So as I type, I'm getting ready to make Spongebob cake #2, since the "party" is this weekend. Wanna come to Bikini Bottom and join us for a Krabby Patty??

Until next time ...
